Yellowroot - Xanthorhiza simplicissima (Package 3 ounces dried)

Our Yellowroot is grown on our farm along the creekbanks. We harvest and dry it and package it in 3-ounce packages. We harvest the stems and partial roots to be sustainable. If you want to purchase in quantities other than 3-ounce bags, please contact us for pricing.

Yellowroot has a long history of use as a medicinal plant by some Indigenous peoples of North America as well as African Americans. According to Clemson University writings, there are at least 34 documented types of use of the plant by southern Appalachian tribes. The authors note that after European settlers and enslaved Africans arrived in North America, they and their descendants incorporated its use into their traditions. Yellowroot is used both as a tea and as a dye. It was the most common yellow dye for traditional baskets and feathers as well as for face paint.

We grow our yellowroot along the banks of the streams on our small forest farm in western North Carolina. We have a lot of different medicinal herbs we grow in small quantities so if there is another herb you are looking for just let us know. We may have it or know another small sustainable grower that has some.
